Short Film assignment

Evaluation:

The film we decided to make was based on the horror genre and consisted of two students meeting under concerning and terrifying circumstances. We decided at the start of our project to vary our use of camera angles such as using close up shots in order to create an up close and personal experience to create tension within the audience. We also wanted to create a movie with different perspectives in order to create an in depth experience of an uncomfortable situation. However, we also wanted to make the mise-en-scene of the characters realistic and age appropriate to create a film that starts of realistic to disconcerting to the audience, as it creates an environment that seems familiar but turns out not to be.

However, during our filming, we decided to take away one of the characters so it was a single character finding his own body instead and trying to solve the issue himself. In doing this it creates a sense of isolation in the film that is transferred to the audience as they are constantly on the look out for anything bad that might happen to the character, making not only the character venerable, but also the audience. The student in the film had a mise-en-scene of light grey in order to incorporate a light tone to the character in order to show his innocence and create an image of him being the victim, not the villain. We then used dark colours for the villain (hooded figure) in the film in order to connote an evil and dark persona coming from the villain to show our audience who is the bad guy. During our editing, we were successful in creating a film that flowed well, along with one that included editing techniques to add some variety to our film in terms of perspective. As well as this, different camera angles were successfully used such as a Dutch angle, high angle and close up shots of the characters and objects in the film.
