Spectatorship-The Dark Knight
Spectatorship:
The Dark Knight
When watching this film I took a preferred reading to the story as I was a passive audience member whilst watching it and accepted what was being told. I enjoyed the film as I liked the re-identification of the character Batman in the film as he is an iconic character, not only within cinema but also in the comic book world. This easily identified character is what overall made me a passive audience member as I enjoy the stories being told that involve the character. As well as this, the individuation of the characters in the film is also what made me take a preferred reading to it, as you have the binary opposites of Batman and the villain, the Joker. The narrative of the film and the two characters fighting one another over the ideas of good and bad is also an interesting aspect which made me like the film.
The opening of the film invites the audience from the outset as it sets up a lot of enigma codes from the start as well as lays out the character of the joker. This creates, for me, a preferred reading from the start, because, as well as Batman, the Joker is another iconic and well known villain in cinema so the re-identification of this character, portrayed in a new way, is inviting and interesting to the audience.
Personally I find no true and distinctive alignment with any of the characters in the film, but I do root for Batman and do see some similar ideals with the character as he's on the good side and fights for those who cant fight for themselves which is what many people want to see themselves as. I also find that the character himself has some human flaws which many people, including myself, can align with as everyone has flaws, and to see a hero like that is what draws the audience into taking a preferred reading to the movie.
